Our season of wearing floppy hats, playsuits and kimonos is nearly over, but there’s no need to worry! The British Fashion Council has recently announced their selection of nine fresh, upcoming designers whose collections will be appearing in London Fashion Week 2015 (18-22 September) for next year’s spring/summer season.
NEWGEN designers are picked carefully, based on their ‘creativity, strong design aesthetic and point of difference’, by a committee. They seek out designers that are ready for everything NEWGEN offers; the support, platform and profile. The British Fashion Council will assist the designers as they begin the process of making their way up in the industry through business seminars that will help ‘build their own infrastructure and skills’. Some previous winners of the scheme are names as big as J.W.Anderson, Marques’Almeida and Alexander McQueen.
NEWGEN was founded back in 1993 by the British Fashion Council for the purpose of uncovering and supporting new emerging talented designers to exhibit their work. Topshop has been sponsoring the scheme since 2001 and are still proudly representing the programme. They provide financial support and the opportunity for exposure in the London Fashion Week, where the designers get a pop-up showroom for four hours after their demonstration to showcase their collections. This gives the new designers the opportunity to speak with buyers and make sales appointments, and even press exposure.
The lucky selection that are receiving the catwalk sponsorship this year are 1205, Ashley Williams and Ryan Lo. Ashley Williams was actually part of the NEWGEN sponsorship programme last year for the spring/summer collection 2015, successfully completing her first solo runway show with her Asian-inspired outfits. 1205 and Ryan Lo also produced exceptional SS15 collections, and it will be very exciting to see what these inspiring fashionistas bring to the catwalk for our next SS season.
Receiving the NEWGEN presentation support are Claire Barrow, Danielle Romeril, Faustine Steinmetz and Molly Goddard, all of whom received a NEWGEN sponsorship the previous season for the SS15 collections, with the exception of Molly Goddard who had a unique take on displaying her creations by throwing herself a birthday party. Apparently the scene rather resembled an extraordinary sea of colourful taffeta and tulle, modelled by her very own friends.
Sadie Williams and Marta Jakubowski are the recipients of the exhibition sponsorship offered through the British Fashion Council by NEWGEN. Sadie Williams has worked with some of the top designers such as Marc Jacobs and J.W.Anderson. Likewise, Marta Jakubowski has had previous experience with Alexander Wang, Bruno Pieter and Hussein Chalayan, before creating her own label.
We know for sure that these recipients are more than worthy of these sponsorships and I’m sure you’re all as excited as I am to see what these unique designers bring forward for our spring/summer collection 2016. I’ll definitely be keeping a special eye out for them at London Fashion week (18-22 September 2015).
