Even if you work out on a regular basis, getting your abs to show can be a struggle. It takes hard work, time and effort to make your abs pop and it definitely is a process! So here are some tips for how you can get your abs to pop.

Target them with a specific workout

One of the best ways to make your abs show more is to work them out more! If you don’t already, you should definitely incorporate in your routine specific workouts that target your ab and core area, like this 30 Day Ab Challenge available on the 30 Day Fitness app. Other specific exercises that are very effective are mountain climbers, leg lifts, burpees and planks.

Do HIIT at least 3 times a week

High Intensity Interval Training, HIIT, is a way you can get a high intensity and effective workout in within a short amount of time. It is best to do it a couple times a week and supplement it with the rest of your workout styles because it is such a high intensity workout. This will help you burn fat, improve your strength, improve your metabolic rate, and help make your abs pop! 

Drink enough water

Hydration is key to good health. It has also been linked to higher metabolism, of which you want for your abs to show. If you drink coffee, caffeine in general, alcohol, or any other dehydrating beverage, boost your hydration levels by upping your water intake by one glass for each dehydrating beverage you consume. 

Be mindful of what you eat 

What you eat has a significant impact on how and when your abs start showing. While exercises are important, what you eat has a very significant impact. In order to burn fat, you’ll need to eat cleaner and avoid processed foods. Stick to a whole foods diet and make sure you are getting your optimal amounts of vegetables and protein/carb/fat balance for your body type, biological age, etc.. 

Burn extra fat with cardio

Cardio workouts are the most effective way to burn extra fat. The abdominals are where many people carry extra fat and amping up your exercises to target this area will help tone your abs and shed fat in that area. 

Amp up the protein intake in your diet

Protein is an important part of your diet, especially when you are working out and trying to build muscle. To build muscle, a large number of calories and protein intake is required and this differs from person to person. Amp up the clean protein intake in your diet by incorporating lean meats, eggs, etc.
