In the aftermath of fashion’s biggest event of the year, London Fashion Week, the winner of this year’s BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund was announced as Sophia Webster.
The much-coveted prize was well-deserved by PlusMinus favourite Webster, whose win will see her take part in a year-long, bespoke, high level mentoring support programme, as well as receiving a grant of £200,000 to take her design business to the next level.
Sophia had some tough competition for this year’s award, with other shortlisted candidates including Emilia Wickstead, Osman and Mother of Pearl. Each candidate presented their collections and five year business plans to the Fund judging committee, which is made up of representatives from businesses who support the Fund and industry experts such as Victoria Beckham and Burberry’s Sarah Manley.
The prize was awarded during a cocktail reception at London’s Bulgari Hotel, hosted in partnership with Perrier- Jouët. It has been given out annually since 2008 and has helped well-known designers such as Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto and Christopher Kane become names on the lips of everyone in fashion.
Alexandra Shulman OBE, Editor of British Vogue and Chair of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, commented: “Sophia Webster is a great winner for this year’s award. The brand encapsulates all the originality and creativity that British fashion is known for while Sophia and her team have pursued a clear vision with drive and professionalism.”
Caroline Rush CBE, Chief Executive, British Fashion Council, added that the judging committee, “was impressed by [Sophia’s] brilliant talent and thorough business acumen… Sophia has an amazing ability to turn accessories into masterpieces and we are thrilled to support her at an exciting time of growth.”
Congratulations to Sophia Webster. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the brand!
