Today is an exciting day for Motel as the brands releases its first Designer Collective range. For their first designer collaboration, Motel has partnered with textile designer and Leeds College of Art graduate Rhianna Ellington.
The limited edition collection features 9 mix-and-match pieces of coordinating separates in an exclusive new print by the designer. Inspired by the darker side of nature, Rhianna created a much more muted print than her usual offering with a palette of jet black, inky blues and deep red.
With Motel being known for their bold style and Rhianna’s portfolio of punchy prints, we think this is a design match made in heaven. Our Editor Jodie Dewberry caught up with the designer to find out more…
JD: We were really excited to learn about this new initiative! How did the collaboration come about?
RE: Motel approached me after discovering my Instagram as they were looking for a print designer to do a collaboration with. I have been a fan of Motel since I was a teenager so jumped at the opportunity to work with them.
JD: Your prints are usually quite bright. How did you merge your aesthetic with that of Motel?
RE: Motel asked me to do a print that was in my signature style but they wanted it to have something different about it. We decided that a nice way to do this was to do the collaboration as an Autumn/Winter collection and have a darker look to the design. I love the print and really enjoyed creating it.
JD: I know the collection had a pretty quick turnaround time. How did you find that?
RE: Although the whole collection has had a fast turn around I actually had a lot of time to create the print. It didn’t feel rushed at any point and I feel that we worked really well together.
JD: This is your first eponymous range. How does it feel to have your name on a collection?
RE: It is incredible! I am so excited to see how it does as a collection. I am also so excited as it is with a brand that I love so much.
JD: Finally, I have to ask… do you have a favourite piece from the collection?
RE: Yes! The playsuit and the Parma dress.
Thanks, Rhianna. We can’t wait to get our hands on some of the pieces when they go on sale!
The Motel x Rhianna Ellington collection launches today and you can get your hand on one (or more!) of the limited edition pieces on the Motel website.
