ACE Threads ClothingHaving recently launched on the 14th of August, the ACE Threads movement has officially begun. To find out more about this exciting new menswear brand, I caught up with founder and creative dream, Liam Spragg, to talk inspiration, what to expect and questionable snack choices…

Like all new ventures, ACE Threads was born around a shisha pipe in West London, where Liam and four friends decided that the time was now to put things in motion. The name itself, ACE, had been lying unused for months by this point, and now it had method to the madness, a clothing line.

When asked what ACE means, Liam explains; “The A is for Artisan, a person skilled in an applied art or a craftsperson. The C is for Chimerical, to be visionary, imaginary, wildly fanciful and unreal. And the E is for Exclusive. Not admitting of anything else, incompatible, unique. I love it because it all interlinks. I came up with the name about a year ago, I just didn’t know what to do with it. Threads came later, and it all just worked.”

Exclusive indeed. With a variety of t-shirts and snapbacks, decorated with incredible illustrations, the brand has started on a good foot. Liam’s designs are the highlight, all done by hand and PC, their uniqueness makes this collection special. “It’s casual, relaxed. Hip. Something stylish, but approached without trying to focus on a specific direction. I don’t like restrictions, so this way there’s no limit to where the brand’s direction can go.”

But who is the ACE Threads man? Spragg talks about how he is that guy that walks in a room, doesn’t have to say a word but everyone knows he’s there. He isn’t necessarily the loudest person in the room, but people are drawn to him. “It’s the kind of guy that just walks in the room and nails it.” Everyone wants to be that guy.

Starting a clothing line, as one person, from scratch, cannot be an easy feat. People try and fail more times a day than Eminem swears in a song, so does Spragg feel confident? Would he do it again? His positivity and excitement shines from his face when I ask him these questions. The sense of pride is second to none. “I’ve really enjoyed it. There is a lot to do, you don’t realise until you start. Back room stuff, research, designing, materials, packaging… but I loved finding this all out. It’s just me making the decisions. It’s all on me, but in a good way. I can live or die by it but if I believe in it and it works then it’s all good.”

His passion for the brand and his designs comes attached to such a calm, cool exterior. Spragg’s genuine love for what he creates comes from his very core, and although he hasn’t had a “major ‘hit you in the face’ moment – yet” he found it incredible and humbling that people were taking photos of them whilst on their first lookbook shoot in East London.  One of those pinch me moments.

Having a full time job along side of this new venture, surely Spragg must have those moments of dread, coming home after a full day in the office, and having to carry on working, but refreshingly, this couldn’t be further from the case. “I’ll finish work and I can still spend 3 or 4 hours on a PC doing something I love and enjoy. It never feels like a wasted afternoon working on concepts.”

It’s this rare rawness of ACE Threads that will make this brand a winner. Although it is very small, and very new, with this amount of care and attention, there’s no doubt this brand with cause a storm in the coming months.

The designs themselves vary in style, some simple, with the brands logo or badge, and some more intricate. Block graphics with phrases and quotes, all in monochrome prints. They’re not the loudest or craziest, but like Spragg said so elegantly, they totally nail it.

ACE Threads is not just tees, they offer 3 snapback designs on black or navy too – it wouldn’t be an urban brand without a snapback now would it…

So, what would be Spragg’s advise to others on starting such a journey? “Be naive with your aspirations and ideas, but not with your effort and application.” Well said.

“Any venture you make, if it’s your passion, make sure it’s just you. As soon as you bring others in, tough decisions are manufactured themselves. Just enjoy it, if you start to think of it as a chore and you’re not enjoying every minute, then it wont be long until you give up.”

He then reflected on a quote he’d heard that morning, that further enhances his points; “If there’s doubt, there’s no doubt.” One to remember there guys.

As we wrap up our chat, Spragg is telling me a little about himself as he finishes his Mocha Frappachino with his cheeky grin sparking so much laugher in the coffee shop. His Jamaican roots,  his shocking grunge phases through school and – to be frank – an awful floor length leather jacket, to which he defends to this day as “awesome”. Apparently it “had a vibe. I don’t know what it was, but it had one.” We’ll take his word for it on that one..

Before we part ways, Spragg leaves me with one last piece of advice. Take a penguin (the chocolate kind, much to my confusion) and put it in the freezer for a while before you eat it. “It will change your world. Frozen penguins are the one.”

Thanks for that Liam, we will.
