Do you ever go to restaurants and find yourself longingly admiring the décor? Restaurant designers spend a long time planning their décor, finding ways to make the diner functional and user-friendly, both for the staff and customers, making sure it’s comfortable, but also making sure that the décor compliments the food and sets the right tone. A romantic Italian restaurant might want soft lighting and romantic colours, whereas a trendy burger joint might prefer bright colours, clashing shades and a fun feel. Décor is actually an incredibly important part of any restaurant dining experience.
It can be harder to recreate at home. Our home kitchens and dining rooms need to be everything. We want bright family breakfasts, romantic date night dinners and everything in between. So, how do you add restaurant glamour to your home dining space?
If you want to be able to change the atmosphere of your room for different occasions, then lighting options are essential. Cool café lamp lighting can add a trendy feel perfect for family lunches or sitting around the table chatting. These could look especially good over a breakfast bar or service area. When you want to create a more romantic atmosphere in the evening or a space where you can relax at the end of the day, you’ll also want lanterns, dimmers or even candles. Giving yourself more than one option with lighting is a good idea in any area of your home.
Seating is an essential part of both restaurant and home kitchens. You can’t fully enjoy a meal if you’re uncomfortable. But, while comfort is important, you can also add some style. Add bold seat cushions or covers to boring old chairs to add some flair, or look for mismatched chairs from antique stores, carboot sales and auctions.
When we buy artwork, we often chose pieces for our lounges and bedrooms, perhaps even the hallway, but rarely do we spend time finding the right pieces for the kitchen. When was the last time you went to a restaurant with plain walls?
In the kitchen, it’s a good idea to stick to tiles as they are easy to clean. But, you can add some art to your choices with fresh prints, bold colours and exciting designs. In the dining room, away from the cooking mess, chose your artwork with the same care as you would any other room in your home. Adding photographs can also work well. Letting some of your life, history and personality into this incredibly important part of your home.
Sometimes, style is all about the details. Think about the smaller ways that you can add some glamour to your dining room. This could be things like having cloth napkins on your table, or large, luxurious wine glasses out and ready to use. Some people think keeping a laid table adds some glamour too.
For many people, their kitchen or dining room is the heart of their home. It’s where they spend time with their families away from the distractions of everyday life. Think about what you need from yours, and make it happen.
