With the months turning chilly and the nights drawing in, it is time to update our wardrobes for Autumn. However, this doesn’t have to eat into our savings, The Frugality’s Alex Stedman has joined forces with McArthurGlen Designer Outlets to bring us an edit of frugal autumn fashion perfect for all budgets.
Forget overhauling your entire look, there will be no throwing out here. Instead the fashion editor, stylist and blogger has curated an edit of game-changing coats, bags and shoes, which will instantly refresh any wardrobe this season. We are talking refreshing not restocking.
“I am an advocate of accessible fashion and have really enjoyed teaming up with McArthurGlen for The Autumn Game Changers edit. A day shopping at a McArthurGlen Designer Outlet proves that you don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe to update your look as the seasons change; you just need to invest in key items, such as the perfect coat, bag or shoes. Incorporating these game-changers into your wardrobe can instantly refresh your look every day.”

We caught up with Alex to discuss staple pieces, mother hood and shopping with a budget…
PM: This edit offers a great seasonal injection, with that in mind what basics do you keep in your wardrobe regardless of the season?
Funnily enough, I am preparing a piece for my blog on just that! As much as I love trends, I am still often drawn to items that are my ‘signature style’ which for me is always denim, a splash of leopard print and red accessories.
PM: Your blog is full of love for the great British high street, where are your favourite places to shop?
I love minimalist High Street shops like Cos and Arket and affordable shops like H&M, but I also love our higher end high street such as French Connection and Hobbs, which is great as McArthurGlen even offers these stores at their outlets with an extra discount.
PM: What are your tips for looking great on a budget?
Confidence is so key for me, I think as long as you love the piece, it doesn’t matter how much the outfit costs – some of my most loved items in my wardrobe are the more affordable ones. I also think good accessories can really lift an outfit, I would never go for the black designer handbag, always the brightly coloured one which can really make a plain outfit stand out.
PM: This year motherhood brought a change to your life, how has it changed your style?
I have tried not to let it influence too many of my dressing decisions, of course I wear more flat shoes now and had to donate a few of my tighter jeans to charity but I still try and keep my style the same. I have been wearing dresses a lot more recently, though, mainly because they don’t require too much styling and at my baby’s 5am wakeup call in the morning my brain isn’t as functional as it used to be!
PM: Your style looks so chic and effortless, where do you get your inspiration?
I love all the cliché fashion muses, to be honest! Alexa Chung, Emanuelle Alt (Editor of French Vogue), Jeanne Damas…I also browse Pinterest and Instagram a lot for inspiration. And often, to clear my head, I love walking around a gallery or just people watching from a cafe, inspiration can come from anywhere.
