There is something exhilarating about heading out on a road trip. Maybe it is the sense of freedom you get from being behind the wheel of a car. Perhaps it is the thrill that you get in seeing landscapes whizz by. Or it could simply be the power of knowing that you are the one in control.

Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that you should hit the open road to experience the sense of adventure yourself. All you need is a vehicle [preferably with retractable awnings], a couple of suitcases, and a map. If you are looking for a bit of inspiration of possible road trips that you can embark upon, let’s look at some of the world’s most iconic journeys in this blog post.

NC500, Scotland

Running 500 miles around the coast of Scotland, the North Coast 500 or NC500 is Great Britain’s newest road which only opened in 2015. In that time, it has quickly grown in popularity as people flock to enjoy the rugged and remote landscapes that are famous throughout Scotland. Expect this to be a journey which takes in hilltop castles, deep lochs, and cosy village pubs. You can travel along the whole road over the course of a long weekend, but it is worth lingering and taking your time over.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

If you prefer travelling in warmer climes, the Great Ocean Road in Australia is a perfect option for you. Again, this is another great coastal route which is the kind of place where mountains and oceans meet – not to mention the rainforests and national parks that you can explore along the way. Though the ocean may look tempting for a dip, you certainly want to avoid the areas where Great White sharks have been known to attack!

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Though it is much shorter that the previous two that we have talked about, the Amalfi Coast road is one which is worth taking your time over – not least because it winds around cliffs with sheer drops! The scenery as you pass through the coastal towns is simply breathtaking, and you should also make sure that you stop for a bite to eat to enjoy some world-famous Italian cuisine along the way.

Route 62, South Africa

Route 62 covers an area of nearly 750 kilometers, but the most famous stretch runs between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. There are plenty of attractions which splinter off the main path including vineyards, hot mineral springs, and little-discovered landscapes. You could also stop at one of the game reserves along the way to spot some of the great animals which the country is famous for.

Whichever one of these road trips that you decide to take, you are bound to enjoy some incredible adventures. Each one offers something different to suit all kinds of travellers. But there are great road trips to be enjoyed all over the world, so if you can’t get to one of these ones, why not create your own?
